Flip a coin. Heads: you have a faithful companion perched on your shoulder, a funny and intelligent bird that speaks and can do tricks. This is the parrot that everyone loves. Tails: you have the other side of the story.  If you’re not afraid to face the sad truth and the great misery of the so-called “pet” parrot, then listen to the ASAP (Association to Shelter and Aid Parrots) and its feathered guests. While uplifting, their story will nevertheless make potential adopters reflect. Describing the lives of birds rescued by the Association and anecdotes that are daily occurrences in the sanctuary, this book describes certain parrot behaviours that are often puzzling for owners.

The authors highlight this bird's physical and psychological fragility, which is directly linked to the living conditions to which captivity relegates it. They underscore the enormous commitment (of time, responsibility, and emotion) required to care for such a bird. They also emphasize the need to preserve parrots in their natural habitat before it gets too late and this emblematic creature of tropical forests and island paradises becomes nothing more than a sad wall ornament.

This book (available only in French) was co-written by two old friends: Anne Boisset, known to us all, and Marie-José Correau, veterinarian doctor. Doctor Philippe de Wailly, renowned veterinarian and member of the American Veterinary Historical Society and ex-president of the Académie vétérinaire de France, wrote the foreword.
